Aspall launches new Imperial Cyder
July 2011: Super premium cyder maker Aspall is continuing it’s recent record of innovative new product development by announcing with the arrival of Aspall Imperial Cyder, an 8.2% abv vintage cyder designed to sit at the top of the premium cyder category.

Aspall Imperial Cyder is based on an original Aspall family recipe dating back to 1921, when it was awarded the Daily Mail Imperial Fruit Award. The 90-year old recipe uses an exclusive blend of the highest quality bittersweet and culinary apples from the 2010 harvest with added muscovado sugar to aid the fermentation. This creates a dark golden cyder, with a rounded, rich aroma which is warm, medium sweet and mellow with a lingering fruit and oak finish, to be savoured by cider connoisseurs.

The vintage cyder is available now in 500ml bottles with an RRP of £2.29 per bottle throughout Sainsbury’s nationally, with further roll-out planned for the end of the summer. Aspall Imperial Cyder complements the existing range comprising Aspall Premier Cru Suffolk Cyder, Aspall Organic Suffolk Cyder, Aspall Draught Suffolk Cyder and Aspall Perronelle’s Blush.

Geoff Bradman, Aspall joint managing director, says: “We are really proud of Aspall Imperial Cyder and of our cyder makers who have successfully refined a 90-year old recipe for modern-day tastes and which complements the Aspall range perfectly. The result is a serious product to be savoured by cider aficionados and is a perfect accompaniment to food, especially with strong cheese, sausages and salads.

“Quality always comes first at Aspall and we will only ever engage in genuine new product development that will drive the cider category forwards. Imperial had been in development for a nearly a year with a planned autumn launch. However, trade feedback was so positive that we accelerated the launch date by four months. We are really excited about our new product, and are looking forward to unveiling further innovation in the coming months.”

Oliver Chadwyck-Healey, Sainsbury’s cider buyer, says: “Aspall Imperial Cyder is a perfect addition to the premium cider range at Sainsbury’s. The iconic bottle shape is already a beacon in the category for quality Suffolk cyder and this new addition will provide loyal Aspall drinkers with something new, as well as attracting new customers to the category.”

Premium ciders now account for 20% of the total cider market, double their share of the category compared to a decade ago. Aspall is driving development of the category with its on-trade business growing at 70% year-on-year.

Aspall launches Lady Jennifer’s crisp, light cyder
15 August 2011: Super premium cyder maker Aspall is continuing its recent innovative new product development by announcing the launch of Aspall Lady Jennifer’s, a 4% abv crisp, light cyder.

Lady Jennifer’s has the lowest abv in the Aspall range and was created to provide a more accessible, lighter and more premium alternative to fruit and pear competitor products. It has been designed to grow the cider category, acting as an entry point to the premium cider market and is likely to be particularly popular with women.

The newest addition to the Aspall range is pale to mid straw in colour, fresh, crisp, slightly sweet and thirst quenching, making it particularly relevant for outside summer garden parties and gatherings. It is available nationally from this month in Waitrose, Tesco and Booths in Aspall’s iconic 500ml bottle, priced at £1.99, as well as also being available to the on-trade.

The introduction of Aspall Lady Jennifer’s follows last month’s launch of Aspall Imperial Cyder, an 8.2% abv vintage cyder designed to be savoured by cider connoisseurs. The range also includes Aspall Premier Cru Suffolk Cyder, Aspall Organic Suffolk Cyder, Aspall Draught Suffolk Cyder and Aspall Perronelle’s Blush.

Geoff Bradman, Aspall joint managing director, says: “We are very conscious at Aspall that any new product development should offer genuine innovation and grow, not cannibalise, the cider category. Lady Jennifer’s taste profile and low abv should attract new drinkers to the premium cider market and encourage further progression within the sector.

“Lady Jennifer’s is named after Mrs Chevallier Guild, the wife of the 7th generation of Aspall founders, who has played an integral role within the business throughout her life. Mrs Guild’s signature cyder, Lady Jennifer’s, is the perfect partner for a garden party and will genuinely help to grow the premium cider market.”
Aspall’s complex blend of bitter-sweet and culinary apples has been handed down through eight generations of the Chevallier family since 1728. To this day, the family still signs off every single batch of cyder before it is bottled, to ensure that quality remains first and foremost.
